The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), a collaborator with the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), establishes criteria for training program certification. Choosing an ASE certified program ensures a quality education in the areas important for the automotive industry and future employers. In North Carolina you can find both High School and Community College programs that have been certified by the ASE. ASE certification means that the program has fulfilled industry standards of instructor credentials, approved curriculum, and instructional equipment and facilities. ASE certification also requires compliance reviews and routine evaluation for certification.
In addition to certifying training programs, the ASE certifies individuals in several different areas including: electrical systems, engine repair, brake systems, suspension and steering, heating and air conditioning. Individuals must register with the ASE to take a certification exam. The exam can be taken with a pencil and paper at a testing site or complete the test on your computer. Questions on the exam are multiple-choice and practical, covering typical diagnostic and repair techniques. The test is designed to be a painless requirement for certification. Typically employers will pay for their employees to take the test or reimburse for the small fee. After five years the certification must be renewed.
